"Ladies and gentlemen." The admiral begins. You're jostling to find a seat, your fellow command academy cadets filing in and sitting down to hear Admiral Kovis, who is in overall command of the fleet, give a speech. This is the second time you've seen him, once when you were accepted into the command academy and given the formal introduction, and now. "Tragedy has befallen us. A hive virus spread throughout the fleet unseen, and has just hours ago flared up, wiping out the crews of almost all of our ships. Thanks to shipboard AIs, however, the fleet is not lost. But we have been diminished, for the fighting men and women aboard all those ships are dead, and their expertise far outmatches that of a computer. A computer cannot make hard decisions, cannot plan a strategy. We need people for that."
"So, cadets, you're all graduating early. Each and every one of you will receive the rank of Fleet Captain when you exit this room, and be put in command of a task force. You will have a small team of handpicked advisers to help you, but if our security is to be maintained, you will need to plan out battles and command your force. The computer will accept whatever commands you give it, no matter how dangerous, convoluted, or suicidal they may seem, and will maneuver your ships appropriately. However, combat is not remote. You will be on a ship in that force, right there with the other ships. It will be your flagship, and while it is heavily upgraded beyond other ships like it, it is not invulnerable. Dismissed."
As everyone files out of the room again, officers stand at the doorways handing out certificates and badges. When its your turn, you get handed a certificate promoting you to the rank of Fleet Captain, allowing you to command multiple ships up to an entire task force. The badge is to be pinned to your clothing, signifying your rank. It's graduation day, and you passed. But out in the real world, every day will be a test of your skills. Good luck.
